— The European Union's health commissioner urged Europeans on Monday to postpone nonessential travel to the United States or Mexico due to swine flu.

EU Health Commissioner Andorra Vassiliou met with the EU foreign ministers on the subject as Spain reported the first confirmed case of swine flu in Europe. That was also the first swine flu case outside North America.

On arriving in Luxembourg, Vassiliou advised Europeans to reassess their travel plans.

She told reporters "they should avoid traveling to Mexico or the United States of America unless it is very urgent for them."

EU foreign ministers discussed the outbreak of swine flu on Monday and the EU health ministers were holding an emergency meeting on the subject Thursday.

Isn't that a bit of an over reaction? It is not in an epidemic here in the U.S. One case diagnosed in Spain, should Mexico and the U.S. advise people not to travel to Europe?

Over the past two days, it has seemed to jump exponentially. The press started with Mexico and California day before yesterday and by last night they had added stories about New York, Kansas, Texas, and Ohio. Then DHS put the USA on a public health emergency, followed by medical professional suggesting the use of masks.

Still, other reports already showed that cases have been found in New Zeland, Canada, France and Spain, so the EU already has it.

There is one case in Ohio and it isn't even serious. The kid was in Mexico with his family but is at home recovering fine. I do think it is an overreaction to not travel at all...

I agree. Why close the fence after the cows are out?

I see everyone starting to panic-if this is an epidemic, but the cases popping up are much like measeles and mumps of yesteryear. Bad stuff, but not enough to kick off global panic, unless it's really a vast conspiracy to cover the accidental release of Captain Tripps (Stephen King fans-you know what I'm saying-see you in Boulder).

Me thinks it's time to stay home and relax a bit. We can clean stuff at our house. There are a few cases in New York, but nothing out here. Maybe Hot Wing Sauce kills the bacteria. I'll have to eat lots of wings.
